    "notes": "The number of people aged 45 years and over in Australia who had retired from the labour force at the time of the ABS Retirement and Retirement Intentions survey, as the ABS estimates it for each financial year the survey was run, in persons: the ABS prints the estimate in thousands to three decimal places (4494.753 for 2024-25, which its key statistics round to 4.5 million) and this file holds that number times 1,000. The ABS defines people retired from the labour force as people who had previously worked and had retired from work or looking for work, and did not intend to look for, or take up, work in the future (the methodology at methodology_url). The survey counts retired people whatever their income or its source: it is not a count of Age Pension recipients, and the two are different things. The survey is run as part of the Multi-Purpose Household Survey across a financial year and covers people aged 45 years and over in private dwellings; the methodology says that since 2014-15 the definition of retirement no longer requires people to have worked in a job for at least two weeks, so the series starts at the 2014-15 survey, the first on the current definition (the table's 'Retired from the labour force' rows run from November 1997, the table itself from May 1980 with the earlier surveys as 'Retired from full-time work', and the ABS marks its 1997 estimate as not taking account of part-time work under 10 hours a week). The survey has been run every two years since 2014-15 (2014-15, 2016-17, 2018-19, 2020-21, 2022-23, 2024-25), so observations are two financial years apart; they are survey estimates, and each carries the ABS's relative standard error (rse, per cent) as published. Every observation is as the 2024-25 release gives it: the ABS publishes the time series again in each release, so an earlier survey's estimate can differ from what its own release printed; a value that changes in a later release is recorded as a revision (update-series skill). The ABS publishes no movement between surveys, so movements_published is false. The ABS gives no date for the next release (its release page says 'Next release Unknown'), so next_release is marked estimated: its period is the next in the two-yearly pattern, and its date is the end of the reference period (30 June 2027) plus the longest interval between a reference period's end and its release among the three most recent releases (26 months, for the 2020-21 survey released on 29 August 2023; the 2022-23 survey was released on 22 May 2024 and the 2024-25 survey on 31 October 2025), not a date the ABS has announced.",
